Ásbyrgi
Ásbyrgi is an extraordinary place. It is a horseshoe-shaped canyon
with cliffs rising up to 100 metres high. It is 3.5 km long and over
1 km wide. Ásbyrgi probably formed after two floods. The first
one most likely happened about 10,000 years ago and the later one
about 3000 years ago.
However, another legend about how it happened is very
interesting. The story is that the horse Sleipnir, the
eight-legged horse of the god Óðinn, stepped there
with one of its hooves as Óðinn rode by. Therefore
the canyon is shaped like a horseshoe.
Mývatn, Dimmuborgir
and Dettifoss
This part of Iceland is extremely special and
beautiful. Mývatn is a lake with 40 small
islands that makes the lake even more special.
Lots of birds can be found here.
The Mývatn Nature Baths is a new geothermal
spa like the Blue Lagoon. There you can relax and
enjoy the area.
Dimmuborgir is nearby. There you can see beautiful
formations in the lava. It is very romantic to have a walk
there and take photographs.
Dettifoss is the most powerful waterfall in Iceland. Sometimes
it is difficult to drive to the waterfall because the road is so bad.
If you have the chance to visit one day, grab the opportunity!
