Brazil
In Brazil there are many traditions around New Year.
Everyone wears white on New Year’s Eve because it is
said that it will bring good luck for the new year. People
who live close to the beach go to the beach at midnight
to jump over the waves seven times. After the wave
jumping they throw flowers into the sea and make
wishes for the new year. Most people also light candles
and go to parties.
United States, New York
In New York, thousands of people gather on Times
Square on New Year’s Eve. They gather there to watch
the big clock on the square and count down the last
few seconds of the old year. When the new year arrives
people cry ‘Happy New Year’ and kiss and hug their
friends and family. After this, people go to parties and
celebrate the new year.
Great Britain
In Great Britain, like in so many other places, many
people go to parties with friends. Many people in
London do the same as the people in New York. They go
to Trafalgar Square to count down the last few seconds
of the old year and celebrate the new one. Some people
toast with a glass of champagne and light fireworks or
just watch a firework display.
