Þingvellir
Þingvellir is one of Iceland’s most historic places
and it has a very special landscape. It is a very
popular stop for tourists, with over 300,000
visiting each year. Alþingi, which is Iceland’s
parliament, was established in Þingvellir in
930 and was held there until 1798. There are
many spectacular places to see there and
lots of hiking routes.
Þingvellir was put on UNESCO’s list of
world heritage in 2004. In Þingvellir there
is a very old and small church, which is
still used today. In Þingvellir there was a
hotel and a restaurant called Hotel Valhöll.
This hotel burnt down in the summer of
2009. Þingvellir is both a historical and
a natural treasure.
Hornstrandir
Hornbjarg is by many people considered to
be one of the most beautiful places in Iceland.
It is located on Hornstrandir in the west part of
Iceland. Nobody has lived there since the middle of
the 20th century and it is very hard to reach. Hesteyri
is another fantastic place in Hornstrandir that is worth
visiting. There are still some houses there that are used as
summerhouses. The nature is beautiful and the birdlife is
also great. Waterfalls and the wild nature make you feel
like time is standing still.
