Linda was in the seventh grade. She
started at a new school last year and
she really missed her old school. It
had been difficult making friends
in this new place. She hadn’t been
bullied or anything like that, but
she didn’t have any friends. The
kids in her class had known each
other since the first grade. She was
never asked to visit anyone’s house
after school. She sometimes played
games in recess with the girls and
sometimes soccer with the boys. She was
quite good at soccer.
This fall she was a little bit nervous about going to
school. She wasn’t smiling and talking about the summer
like the other girls. She kept to herself like before.
The first day of school began on a Monday at a quarter to
nine. When the teacher read the names of the students,
she heard a new name: Sharon. Linda raised her head and
saw Sharon. She looked a bit older than the other girls. She
was pretty and the boys smiled at her and were obviously
interested. All the girls were keen on knowing more about
Sharon and started talking to her during recess.
After school Linda sat beside the fence next to the parking
lot and waited for her mother to pick her up. They were
going to the store to buy new schoolbooks. Her mother
had promised to be there by three and it was almost three
o’clock. Linda hadn’t been waiting for long when the new
girl came and sat next to her and introduced herself.
