Crimes and Mysteries 67
Donald thought, ‘It is only a tiny little bucket. She can
just take it.’
But he couldn’t disappoint his wife, so he spoke to
the woman.
‘Please don’t take my milk and leave me alone.’
The woman took the milk anyway but Donald felt
like she gave him some kind of signal to follow him.
Donald followed the woman, but kept his distance and
watched her walking. She hardly touched the ground.
She walked a long way and finally came to a house that
Donald thought was abandoned. The woman went
inside but Donald didn’t see her open the door; she just
somehow floated through it.
Donald wasn’t sure if he should go into the house after
her. Maybe she was a criminal and would hurt him.
‘No, of course not,’ Donald thought to himself. ‘She
seems so ill. I have to enter.’
Donald opened the door and heard someone crying.
He walked inside nervously. The woman he had seen
each of the last three days was lying on the floor, dead.
Next to her body was a small baby, two empty buckets
of milk and the fresh one she had just stolen. The baby
had been crying.
Donald was shocked to see the woman dead. He was
even more shocked to see the baby. He took it and
returned to his wife. They called the police, who said
that the woman had likely been dead for three days.
No one knew her or where she came from.
Donald and his wife decided to adopt the baby.
