was an orphan girl whom they were taking care of. My
mother loved this girl Elizabeth instantly since she wanted
a daughter. Elizabeth was adopted into our family. We were
raised like brother and sister and we never fought. Later my
parents had two more children, Ernest and William. At this
time we stopped travelling so much and moved to Geneva.
We also had a country house at Belrive, which is a quiet
place away from the city.
I became close friends to a boy called Henry Clerval. We
spent a lot of time together.
I was a very happy child. My parents were very kind to
us. When I was seventeen years old my parents decided to
send me to the University of Ingoldstadt. A terrible thing
happened before I left. My mother became very ill and
soon we knew that she would die. My mother talked to
Elizabeth and me and told us that she wanted us to marry.
She also told Elizabeth that she wanted her to take her place.
Elizabeth took care of the children and the household.
I arrived in Ingoldstadt shortly after this and started
studying. I was good at science and devoted all my time to it.
