Chapter 1
My name is Victor Frankenstein. I come from Geneva, in
Switzerland. My parents are wealthy and we travelled a lot
when I was young. My mother was a very kind woman.
Once when we were travelling we visited a poor family on
a farm. This family had five children; one of these children

Frankenstein was written by a young
woman named Mary Shelley. She was born
in 1797 and was only 18 years old when
she started writing Frankenstein. The idea
came to her when she and her husband and
other friends were staying in Switzerland
for the summer. It was a rainy summer
and the friends had to stay indoors where
they started telling each other horror stories.
Frankenstein was Mary’s story. The story was
published when Mary was 21 years old. The story in this
book is retold by the authors.
