I began to create my creature. It was very difficult and
I wanted to make the person very large and tall. It was
easier for me to work on a big body. I was working in my
laboratory all the time and never went outside. I never
wrote to my family and didn’t even think about them
during this time.
One cold November night I saw the result of my hard
work. My creation came alive. I saw his yellow eyes open
and he breathed and moved his arms and legs. I looked
at him. I had created life.
He was terribly ugly. He had yellow, dry skin. His eyes
were pale and he had black, thick hair. He was a monster.
I was filled with fear and ran out of my laboratory to my
bedroom and fell asleep. When I awoke someone was
standing over me. It was my monster. The monster tried
to speak but it only made a terrible sound. It reached
with its hand towards me and tried to touch me. I was
filled with fear and ran out of my room. It was a rainy
night and I walked aimlessly around the streets until I
saw a friendly face. It was my childhood friend Henry.
He told me that he was now starting his studies and that
he wanted to learn foreign languages.
He was very happy and excited telling me all this when
all of a sudden he looked at me more closely and said
‘You don’t look too good. You are too thin and pale. You
look ill.’
Henry took me to my room and helped me into bed.
Luckily the monster had gone. Henry took really good
care of me for months while I was dangerously ill. When
spring came, I became stronger. I wanted to get even
better before I returned to Geneva and find my family
and Elizabeth.
The following winter I studied side by side with Henry.
