NEXT UP! 3 54 Lead the way! Write and prepare a persuasive or motivational speech. Deliver your speech to your class. If you have already written a speech, you can choose to deliver that instead. You should also prepare to have a conversation with your teacher and fellow students about your speech after your performance. Prepare to reflect on the message in, and the purpose of your speech. Also, prepare to point out the language you have used in your text that is typical for speeches. Last but not least, prepare to talk about what you have learnt in this process. Preparing your speech With a persuasive or motivational speech, you want to convince your audience of something or change their way of thinking. You may want to gain support for your views, or you might want to inspire your audience to act on something. The audience is your class – how might this affect your language? Choose a topic that really interests you. What is the purpose of your speech? What is your message? Use the writing table on page 35 to help you with the structure. Make sure to include some of the following language techniques in your speech: repetition, personal pronouns, inclusive language, emotive language, poetic devices, quotes and/or anecdotes.
