83 2 Explore One girl, one dream When you were little, did you dream about doing something fantastic one day? Do you still have that dream? When she was eight, Laura Dekker dreamt about sailing around the world – alone. At fourteen, her dream came true. In August 2010, she said goodbye to her family and friends. She sailed out from Gibraltar, Spain, in her boat Guppy. Laura is from the Netherlands. The Dutch authorities tried to stop her from sailing. They thought she was too young. Could a child survive at sea alone? After ten months in court, they decided she could go. Living on a boat was not a new experience to Laura. Her parents sailed for years. Laura was born in New Zealand. When her parents divorced, she lived with her father on his boat. He taught her how to sail solo. To prepare for her journey, she sailed solo across the North Sea to England and back.
