11 1 A world of English The Vikings were also known as the Norsemen. Many of them first settled on the northern and eastern shores of England. In this area, many of the villages and cities have names that end with the Norse words by and torp, for example Grimsby and Scunthorpe. Grim, for example, was a common Norse name and Grimsby simply means “Grim’s village”. Norse words such as husbondi, knifr and taka are words that are still used in English, although these words have changed over time. Simply put, the Vikings were great shipbuilders and travelled far across the seas. On these travels, they took the Old Norse language with them.
