NEXT UP! 1 14 Cześć, hello, halló, hola! My name is Jakub. Sometimes people ask me where I come from, as if I’m not from here. But I have lived in Reykjavík all my life. My father is from Poland. He came here to work and fell in love with my mother. At my house, we speak Icelandic, Polish and English. My parents still speak English with each other – maybe because it was their first contact language. While my mother speaks Icelandic with me and my siblings, my dad always speaks Polish. I understand everything he says, but I always answer him in Icelandic. I guess you can call me bilingual. When we visit family in Poland, we mostly communicate in English. People who speak Polish mix English words into their language, for example, bus, window and table. English is my favourite subject in school, in addition to maths. My new English teacher speaks mostly English in class. She says that we don’t get any better if we don’t try. Some of my classmates think it’s embarrassing to speak MODEL TEXT View from Reykjavik
