NEXT UP! 3 80 Write an informative article The main purpose of an informative article is to give the reader information about a specific topic. In this chapter, “Wildlife at risk” is an example of an informative article. Now you are going to practise writing the same type of text about another topic. Informative article An informative article will answer several or all of the five Ws: who, what, when, where, why. You can structure your article like this: • title • an introduction to the topic • body paragraphs • a conclusion • a list of sources you have used Remember, every paragraph should contain a topic sentence and two to four supporting sentences. The topic sentence states the point of the paragraph. The supporting sentences go into more detail, elaborating on the topic sentence. They also give examples or evidence of the point. Plan your writing You are going to write an informative article. Choose one of the following topics to focus on: plastic pollution, extreme weather, illegal wildlife trade a) Freewrite about your chosen topic for five to eight minutes. If you don’t know much about your chosen topic, write down at least five questions you need to find an answer to. Depending on your topic, you will answer the five Ws differently.
