Paragraphs in nonfiction A paragraph should contain a topic sentence and two to four supporting sentences. The topic sentence states the point of the paragraph. The supporting sentences go into more detail, elaborating on the topic sentence. They also give examples or evidence of the point. Example: Topic sentence: A few small steps will reduce your carbon footprint. Elaboration, examples or evidence: Avoid plastic bottles by investing in a reusable bottle. Take a backpack or a reusable bag when you go shopping so you do not add to plastic waste in our oceans. Do not throw food away – food-waste is the second biggest source of garbage in landfill.
