NEXT UP! 3 78 WRITING 22 Write a paragraph a) Read the topic sentence in the first body paragraph in “Wildlife at risk": The rise in temperature across the globe threatens animals that live near ice caps. Close read the rest of the paragraph. Find the evidence or examples that elaborate on the topic sentence. Write your notes in keywords. b) Go online and search for information about an endangered animal. Take keyword notes. Check more than one source. Use the example structure above to write a paragraph. You will include a topic sentence that states the point of the paragraph, and the rest of the paragraph should add more information. Paragraphs in nonfiction A paragraph should contain a topic sentence and two to four supporting sentences. The topic sentence states the point of the paragraph. The supporting sentences go into more detail, elaborating on the topic sentence. They also give examples or evidence of the point. Example: Topic sentence: A few small steps will reduce your carbon footprint. Elaboration, examples or evidence: Avoid plastic bottles by investing in a reusable bottle. Take a backpack or a reusable bag when you go shopping so you do not add to plastic waste in our oceans. Do not throw food away – food-waste is the second biggest source of garbage in landfill.
