27 1 Leading and following GRAMMAR 26 Subject-verb agreement When we speak of subject-verb agreement in grammar, it means that there is a correspondence between the subject and the verb. Example: S V The boys are happy. The boys (plural subject) agrees with are (plural verb form). S V The car is red. The car (singular subject) agrees with is (singular verb form). Study these sentences: The purpose of a speech is to entertain. The language you use is the key to getting your message across. The pages are full of scribblings. The writers are anonymous. a) Copy the sentences and identify the subject (S) and the verb (V) in each of the sentences. b) Replace the subject in each of the sentences with a pronoun.
