NEXT UP! 3 170 Write a reflective essay The purpose of a reflective essay is to examine an issue in greater detail. When we reflect on something, we think about causes, consequences and impacts, and not just for ourselves. Reflective essay A reflective essay should include: • a title • an introduction • main body paragraphs in which you shed light on different aspects of your topic • a conclusion to sum up your thoughts Plan your writing You are going to write a reflective essay on a topic you would like to explore. Think of your topic as a question, one you would like to try to answer, such as: Why are friends important? Are online friends as good as real-life friends? What are the benefits of living in the countryside? How does social media affect your life? Why do animals have just as much worth as humans? When you have chosen your topic, work on the following task: a) Freewrite for a couple of minutes on your topic. Write down everything you can think of in relation to it. b) Write down at least three reasons why you want to explore this topic. c) What reflective questions can you ask to explore the topic more deeply? Write down at least three reflective questions. A reflective question has no right or wrong answer but helps you explore different sides of a topic.
