4 Walls and bridges 151 TALKING 3 Obstacles Work with a partner. An obstacle can be a literal thing that blocks one’s path, like a tree that has fallen down. It can also have a figurative meaning, for example: Being anxious can be a major obstacle to making new friends. Together, think of three literal obstacles and three figurative obstacles. 4 Write definitions Cut a piece of paper into eight pieces. On one side of each piece, write a focus word. On the back, write a sentence or two to define the word. Once you have defined all the words, swap notes with a partner. Place the notes so the definitions are facing up. Read your partner’s definitions and try to guess which focus word they have defined. Turn the note around to see if your answer is correct. Example: A refugee is someone who has to flee the country they come from. 5 Make a puzzle Work in groups of three. Write all the focus words in big capital letters on a blank piece of paper. You will use these to make a letter puzzle. Cut the words into pieces, with one letter per piece. Include a few extra letters that do not appear in any focus words. Student A translates all the words into Icelandic and reads them aloud to the others in the group one at a time. The other students spell each word in English using the letter puzzle. Continue until you have pieced together all the words. literal – hér: raunverulegur figurative meaning – yfirfærð merking reflect separation flee refuge Hæfniviðmið • Tekist á við margs konar aðstæður í almennum samskiptum, miðlað og tekið á móti upplýsingum. • Tileinkað sér og nýtt fjölbreyttan orðaforða og viðeigandi hugtök sem tengjast ólíkum viðfangsefnum.
