More than three million people were killed, including over 58 000 Americans, most of them young soldiers. At the big universities, students gathered in nonviolent anti-war protests. The “flower power generation”, also known as “hippies”, believed in living more freely than their parents before them and did not accept the government’s policy of conscription.
