NEXT UP! 3 126 Write a discussion text The purpose of writing a discussion text is to examine and debate an issue. In a discussion text, you present different perspectives and explore different ideas. It is common to end with a personal opinion or comment. Discussion text A discussion text should include: • a title • an introduction • a main body – discuss one argument per paragraph • a conclusion to state your opinion • references (the sources you have used) Plan your writing In Iceland, you are allowed to vote in government elections from the age of eighteen. Many people believe you should be able to vote when you turn sixteen. Write down keyword answers to the following questions: a) Why do you think Icelandic authorities have decided that eighteen is a suitable age to be given the right to vote? b) Go online and find two articles about countries considering giving voting rights to sixteen-year-olds. Write three to five sentences to summarise what the article says. Make sure you find arguments both for and against. c) Choose one of the articles you found in task b) and practise quoting and citing a source in a text: Refer to the source, add the quote and then comment on the information it offers. Examples: According to the article “Why citing sources is important” from GRG News, “including a citation to a reliable source means the reader can trust the information given” (Smith 2019).
