People might even get so angry about having to vote, they might give their votes to extremist parties just to be provocative. In addition, a democracy is based on the freedom of making choices. By taking away someone’s choice not to vote, we are limiting their freedom. In a democracy, we cherish the freedom of making our own choices, even though we may disagree with the choices others make. I am sure there are other arguments both for and against making voting obligatory. My personal opinion is that it is better to find out why people do not vote than to force them into voting. If we understand some of the reasons why people do not vote, we could do something about it. Maybe we just need to make politics easier to understand and closer to home for more people?
