Focus words UNDERSTANDING 1 Work with focus words Read the text: In every democracy, freedom of speech is important. Without it, many people would not have the rights they have today. At the same time, we have a responsibility to participate in the democracy by actually using our right to vote. As members of a community we must make our voices heard but also listen to and reflect on the voices of others. This way our community can move forward together. a) Write down all the focus words you can find in this text. b) Which focus word is missing from the text? Write an additional sentence for the text using the missing word. c) Write a short paragraph to explain what freedom of speech means to you. Write at least five sentences. If you like, you can start like this: To me, freedom of speech means … 2 Sit or stand Five students sit on chairs in front of the class. The teacher reads a focus word, and then spells it in English. The teacher chooses to spell it correctly or not. If the students think the word is spelled correctly, they rise. If they think it is spelled incorrectly, they remain seated.
