NEXT UP! 2 96 A guide to becoming a critical reader First of all, don’t read (or watch) anything without considering the fact that texts are never neutral, be that an ad, a Netflix show, a news report or a history book. All texts are created by someone, shaped from a particular perspective and for a purpose. All carry bias, all have a message, and all are trying to position us to think this way or that way. Secondly, ask questions. With any text, ask yourself the following: • Who created or wrote this information? • Who benefits if I believe this information? How might they benefit? • Am I reading (or watching) blindly?
