75 2 Communication Depending on your topic, you will answer the five Ws differently. Example: basketball What is basketball? When and where was basketball first played? Where is basketball a popular sport? Who is famous for playing basketball? Why do you like basketball? Structure your informative article Structure Content Title The title should say something about your topic. Think of a catchy title that will get the reader interested. Introduction Present and describe your topic briefly. Body paragraphs The body paragraphs should answer the five Ws. Each paragraph should start with a topic sentence, and have two to four supporting sentences. Conclusion Sum up your text. It is best not to introduce any new facts in the conclusion. List of sources List your sources. Use the model text as an example to help you plan and structure your article. Checklist: • I have written an informative article about a specific topic. • In my text, I have done one or several of these things: described, retold, explained, investigated, given instructions. • I have written an introduction, at least two body paragraphs and a conclusion. • I have answered several or all of the five Ws in my text. • I have found relevant and trustworthy sources and written them up in a list. • I have checked my text for spelling mistakes.
