NEXT UP! 2 74 Write an informative article The purpose of an informative article is to give the reader information about a specific topic. Now you can practise writing an informative article about a topic you find interesting. Informative article An informative article will answer several or all of the five Ws: who, what, when, where and why. You can structure your article like this: • title • an introduction to introduce the topic • body paragraphs • a conclusion • a list of sources you have used Every paragraph should contain a topic sentence and two to four supporting sentences. The topic sentence states the point of the paragraph. The supporting sentences go into more detail, elaborating on the topic sentence. They also give examples or evidence of the point. Plan your writing Choose one of these topics you would like to write an informative article about: a historical event, a famous person, or a sport or an activity you are interested in a) Freewrite about your chosen topic for five to ten minutes. If you don’t know much about your chosen topic, write down at least five questions you need to find an answer to. b) Go online and find one or two sources that give you additional information.
