NEXT UP! 1 60 Josef Tzegai Yohannes (1980– ) grew up in Lindeberg, in Oslo. He is the creator of the comic book The Urban Legend. Yohannes writes the stories and the illustrator, NewTasty, brings the characters to life. The comic book has been translated into eleven languages. The Urban Legend has been printed in American newspapers, and appears in educational materials in Iceland, Norway, Eritrea, South Africa, Kenya and Brazil. The creation of The Urban Legend Josef Yohannes got the inspiration to create the superhero The Urban Legend after a stay in Botswana, Africa. Seeing how poverty affects children, he came up with the idea to create a strong superhero who could help those who have nothing. Someone who could be a role model, who could motivate others to reach their goals and fulfil their dreams. If you were to create a superhero, what would your superhero be like? In the daytime, Malcom T. Madiba works as a teacher. At night, he turns into The Urban Legend who fights crime in Capital City. When Josef Yohannes started creating his superhero, he tells us he had a very specific idea in mind. He wanted his character to look like any other person on the street. “Malcolm T. Madiba is a sincere and vulnerable person who people can relate to,” Yohannes says. “He wants the best for all people and he wants them to feel safe. When he becomes The Urban Legend, he gives a voice to the voiceless and fights injustice and evil,” Yohannes explains. When Madiba becomes The Urban Legend, he doesn’t have any superpowers.
