NEXT UP! 1 158 My London adventure Dear Lizzie, London, 6 October, 2026 I hope you are enjoying your holiday as much as I am. I am having such a good time. Going to galleries and drinking litres of tea, like a proper English lady, inspired me to write you a letter the old-fashioned way! On the first day here, we went to Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, Madame Tussauds and Tate Modern. My mum was afraid that we would go home without seeing the most famous landmarks and decided to cram them all into the first day. In the evening, we went to the West End and watched Les Misérables. I am sure it is an entertaining musical, but my mum sang along to every song. I was so embarrassed that I couldn’t concentrate. I’m convinced she does it just to annoy me! Day two was Monday and we went to Old Spitalfields Market. After walking around all the stalls, my sister had booked a guided tour with a fantastic street artist. He showed us around the area, which is famous for all its amazing graffiti and street art. My mum looked terrified and kept asking if they were allowed to paint on people’s houses like that. The street artist reassured her (like, a million times) that all the art was legal. (Except a couple – but he only told me that.) On Tuesday, my mum had booked us a table at The Ritz for high tea. You would have loved it! We got tiered plates with small sandwiches (no crusts), scones, and clotted cream. It was fantastic! The only downside was that my dad didn’t know there was a dress code, and showed up in his regular, worn-out Goretex jacket. He was not allowed in without a blazer and tie. We almost died laughing and he got so offended he went for a burger next door instead. Well, his loss – maybe he’ll bin that terrible jacket once and for all! Yesterday we went for a long walk in Hyde Park. It is SO nice! At one point, we came across a man standing on a corner yelling something. I didn’t understand all of it, but it had something to do with politics. A man walking by told us MODEL TEXT old-fashioned – gamaldags landmark – kennileiti to cram in – að troða inn entertaining – skemmtilegt to annoy – að pirra a stall – sölubás a street artist – götulistamaður terrified – skelfingu lostinn to reassure – að fullvissa legal – löglegt tiered plates – bakkar á nokkrum hæðum crusts – brauðskorpur clotted cream – hleyptur rjómi dress code – reglur um klæðnað a blazer – jakki offended – móðgaður to bin – henda í ruslið
