The writer, Johanna, wants to convince the head teacher at her school to let the students run a school canteen. Now you are going to write your own opinion piece on another topic: school uniforms. Imagine the school board has decided that students at your school should start wearing uniforms. What do you think about that? Your opinion piece will be published on the school blog. Opinion piece The purpose of writing an opinion piece is to convince the reader to consider something you feel strongly about. When you write an opinion piece, you should follow this structure: • introduction • first body paragraph: First argument with reasons to support your opinion. • second body paragraph: Second argument with reasons to support your opinion. • conclusion Plan your writing a) First, you need to decide if you are for or against wearing uniforms at your school. Then, you should write down at least two arguments. If you have more than two arguments, your opinion piece can have more than two body paragraphs. Remember: one paragraph for each argument. b) Create a title to catch the reader’s attention. The title should also give the reader an idea of what your text is about. You can for example use the topic of the opinion piece as a title or ask a question, for example: School canteen run by students or Should students be allowed to run the school canteen?
