NEXT UP! 2 84 Ernest Hemingway (1899–1961) is one of the most celebrated American authors. He wrote novels and short stories, and his writing style has influenced many other authors. Hemingway lived an adventurous life. Amongst other things, he enjoyed bullfighting, fishing and hunting. He participated in both world wars and worked as a war correspondent during the civil war in Spain. In 1954, he received the Nobel Prize for Literature. Sadly, at sixtyone, he took his life with a shotgun. The short story “A Day’s Wait” is from the collection Winner Take Nothing, published in 1933. A Day’s Wait He came into the room to shut the windows while we were still in bed and I saw he looked ill. He was shivering, his face was white, and he walked slowly as though it ached to move. “What’s the matter, Schatz?” “I’ve got a headache.” “You better go back to bed.” “No, I’m all right.” “You go to bed. I’ll see you when I’m dressed.” But when I came downstairs he was dressed, sitting by the fire, looking a very sick and miserable boy of nine years.
