However, a spelling mistake or a translation gone wrong can cause great confusion – and sometimes is quite funny. TALKING 24 Work with the photos Discuss the following questions with a partner: a) Some of the signs have spelling mistakes. What were they supposed to say? Correct the mistakes. b) You will also find examples of translations gone wrong. Suggest what could be the right translations. Write down your translations. 25 Discuss translations Work with a partner. a) Some words and phrases are difficult to translate from language to language. Look at the following words and expressions and try to find English words or phrases that mean the same: sólarhringur skreppa Þetta reddast. álegg systkin Takk fyrir mig! gluggaveður rúntur veðurtepptur b) With a partner, write a conversation between an Icelander and a tourist. The tourist asks questions about Icelandic culture, and the Icelander answers by using typical Icelandic terms translated into English as the ones in task a).
