29 1 What’s your story? Structure your personal recount Structure Content Title The title should give a hint about the event of the recount. It should also make the reader curious. Introduction Explain the setting. Useful questions: How old were you? Where did it take place? Who was involved? Building suspense Include descriptions to help build suspense. What were you feeling and thinking? How did people around you act and react? Use adjectives to describe. Climax This is the peak of your story – the most exciting / interesting / scary / funny / worrying part. Ending If you like, you can include your own reflections in the ending. Why do you remember this experience so well? When you write about something that has happened, you use past tense verbs. Scan your text and check that you have conjugated the verbs correctly. You can cross-check the irregular verbs you have used with the table on page 260 in the Reference section. Checklist: • I have written a story about a personal experience. • I have given my story a suitable title. • My story has an opening, a build-up of suspense, a climax and an ending. • I have used adjectives and adverbs to make my story come alive. • I have checked that I have conjugated the verbs correctly. • I have made sure I don’t use the same words too often.
