135 3 Role models 29 Describe the characters a) In this short story, you meet two people: Roger and Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones. Based on the story you have read, how would you describe the two characters’ personalities? You can focus on the following points to write your notes about the characters: • adjectives used to describe them • how they act and react • what they say • the way they talk Write two paragraphs, one about Roger and one about Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones. Finish each paragraph with your own opinion of the character. b) What does Mrs. Jones do for Roger? Find examples from the text and write them down. 30 Explain symbols A symbol is one thing used to represent something else. Example: A skull symbolises death or danger. Roger steals Mrs. Jones’ purse because he wants to buy blue suede shoes. What do you think these shoes may symbolise? Write a short explanation. TALKING 31 Perform the scene The main part of the plot takes place in Mrs. Jones’ home. Act out this scene between Roger and Mrs. Jones. Use the lines from the text. Practise with your partner, then perform the scene. “Blue Suede Shoes” is a song written by Carl Perkins in 1955. The song became a major hit when Elvis Presley released his version of the song in 1956. “Thank You, Ma’am” was published in 1958.
