Set in Malawi in the mid-2000s, it tells the story of William Kamkvamba, a thirteen-year-old whose imagination and resourcefulness save his rural community from famine. William comes from a family of farmers who struggle to make ends meet in a country plagued by flooding and drought. Even so, his parents make sure he gets an education. In his spare time, William loves to go to the local junkyard in search of electrical components to fix radios for his neighbours. When the crops fail, William is forced to leave school, but manages to get access to the library to continue studying. As the famine worsens, there is political tension and the community starts falling apart. Inspired by his science book, William comes up with a plan to help his village. To make it possible, he not only needs his father’s most precious belonging, he must also convince him that he can do what seems impossible.
