Focus words UNDERSTANDING 1 Work with focus words Read the text: Ihave many relatives, and there seems to be a tradition in my family to settle abroad. Several of my aunts, uncles and cousins live in the USA, and Ihave three cousins in Switzerland. My grandmother advised my uncle to study in Australia and he never came back after his studies. She misses him because they are so close. My closest relative is my brother. He is four years older than Iam, but he always listens to my advice. a) Write down the focus words you find. b) The focus words advice and advise look similar, but, not only do we spell them differently, they also belong to different word classes. First, translate the sentences where you find these two focus words into Icelandic. Then, decide which word class each focus word belongs to. 2 Culture Culture is synonymous with customs: the holidays we celebrate, the food we eat, how we greet each other, how we dress, and our religion or philosophy of life. a) What would you say is typical for Icelandic culture?
