A backpacker from Birmingham Diana Green, a 20-year-old backpacker from Birmingham in England was given a 10-year prison sentence yesterday for smuggling drugs out of India. When the sentence was passed she broke down and cried. She claimed she had been tricked into smuggling 11 kilos of cannabis in her suitcase. An Israeli man, who she claimed had asked her to carry the suitcase, was freed because of lack of evidence. She was arrested four years ago at Bombay airport when cannabis was found in a secret compartment in her suitcase. She claimed she had no idea that the drugs were there. She has already spent four years in a hellhole of an Indian prison awaiting trial.
