Countable and uncountable nouns
- Countable nouns have a plural form. We can say
- a dog, some dogs, dogs
- the dog, the dogs, my dog, their dogs etc.
- two dogs, three dogs etc.
- We use "how many" with countable nouns.
- Uncountable nouns do not have a plural. We can say
- some wine, wine
- the wine, my wine, his wine etc
- We cannot use a number + uncountable noun.
- We use "how much with countable nouns. To say how much wine we use a countable + of e.g. two bottles of wine, too glasses of wine
- We sometimes use uncountable nouns as countable nouns when we are ordering drinks or food e.g. two teas, one coffee and three cokes but never with milk or water. You have to say two glasses of milk.
- We can use uncountable nouns as countable nouns when we are talking about "a kind of" or "kinds of", e.g., I love French wines and cheeses.
- The following nouns are uncountable "information", "news", "advice", "furniture", "luggage", "progress", "research", "weather", "work", "homework". "housework", "travel" and "money".
