The doctor’s last visit Smith, the policeman, (walk) down the street. He (watch) the street carefully. He (want) to be a good policeman and his careful eye (miss) nothing. He (notice) a window was open, a dog (bark) in the distance and someone (close) a window quietly. He (look) at house number 3. It was a big house and it (need) painting. It (look) as if no one (live) there. Suddenly the front door (open) and a man (rush) out. He was carrying a leather case. He (look) white and ill. His eyes (seem) too large for his face. He (push) past the policeman and although Smith (try) to stop him, he (continue) up the street. Smith (follow) the man, but he (disappear) when he (turn) the corner. Smith (enter) the house. Dust (cover) the floor and furniture but he (notice) that the only footprints were his own. His heart (jump). He (wonder) how the man had got out of the house as there were no footprints. He heard a woman scream as he (open) the door to leave the house. She (scream) and (scream). The sound came from upstairs. Then the screaming (stop) as he (storm) upstairs, but it (start) again as soon as he (reach) the bedroom door. He (rush) in. The light from his torch (travel) round the room. He saw a bed. He (walk) towards it, (reach) out and (pull) the covers away from the bed. A dead woman’s face (look) up at him. “My God” he (cry), “Murder”. He (cover) the dead woman’s face and (close) the bedroom door behind him. He (phone) the police station and (describe) what he had seen, a dead woman who (smell) terribly. The sergeant (interrupt) him and (order) him to return to the station. Smith (obey) although he (fail) to understand why his sergeant (refuse) to come to the house or why he (refuse) to look for the man who had rushed out of the house. But was he the murderer? Who (murder) the woman in house number 3?
